Our new meeting location is J O'Neills Place, 17 Thomas Street (formerly Krainski's). Former President Jimmy Carter, who is a Lion, has nominated Lions for the Nobel Peace Prize. Lions also recently received a grant from the Global Health and Education Foundation for our SightFirst II campaign and Financial Times named Lions the #1 global NGO (nongovernmental organization). The Sayreville Lions Club received a Certificate of Achievement at last year's State Convention for our support of youth in the community. Programs include the High School awards and scholarship, the Peace Poster Contest and support of the Girl Scouts who assist at our pancake breakfasts. We were successful in obtaining use of a roadside billboard sign belonging to the town to use for the Lions. A new sign is being designed and will be sponsored by several businesses in town. The aquisiton of this sign now gives us a presence at all the main entries to the town. We are building a new website and plan to include our new address on our roadside signs. More information on Lionism is available on our current web page at: http://www.sayrevillelions.org-a.googlepages.com/home Lions International has just released its new website which is more robust and user -friendly. Our Spring 2009 Pancake Breakfast was held on April 5th from 8:00AM until Noon at the Sayreville Middle School. Proceeds support community projects. Many thanks to the Girl Scouts who helped make the breakfast a success. We appreciate their assistance. Also, thanks to the community for supporting this project and also our White Cane Sale. The Club hosted the winners in the Lions Peace Poster Contest sponsored by Lions International. The contest is run locally in the Sayreville Middle School and has been well supported. Congratulations to the winners who received cash awards for their efforts. The Sayreville Lions Club participates in a Statewide eyeglass recycling program. The goal of the program is to promote eyeglass collection and recycling to meet the demand for quality eyeglasses in developing nations. A collection box is provided at the rear of the Borough Hall on Main Street in Sayreville. In addition to the 5 new members added to our membership during the 2007-08 year another new member was added in December of 2008 and we expect to add 3 new members during our 2008-09 year. Lions International has recognized the Sayreville Club for its leadership and growth. New members within the past year were honored at a special ceremony conducted by our International President at the World's Fair Grounds in New York. One of our members was able to attend and report back on this special event. We will provide three awards and, this year, two scholarships to the members of the 2009 graduating class of SWMHS selected by the faculty at the High School graduation in June . The Club also contributed $1,700 to various State approved sight projects during the 2008-09 fiscal year. These contributions are in addition to the high school awards and other support provided to the community throughout the year. Descriptions of the State approved projects are available on the NJ State Lions website http://www.njlions.org.
